Sid Meier to bring Civilization to Facebook

By on October 23, 2009

There’s been a lot of comment that the games that succeed on Facebook are not established brands. Farmville, Pet Society, Mafia Wars: they’re all new games from new companies (endless cloning notwithstanding).

Sid Meier is about to change all that.

He’s announced Civilization Network for Facebook, a free-to-play version of Civ on Facebook where gamers will work together to get the full experience in a persistent world.

From his announcement:

“Civilization Network will allow you to join together with your friends to create the world’s most powerful, richest, smartest, or just plain coolest civilization.

You can coordinate your strategy to win great battles, share your technology to jump ahead of your rivals, lobby your family and friends to form your own government and win vital elections, manage and grow your cities to maximize production and happiness, spy on your enemies, and work with your friends to create the great Wonders of the World.”

It’s a big move from a big brand, and I for one am very much looking forward to it.

You can sign up to be a beta tester at http://www.facebook.com/civnetwork (and 17,721 people had already done so by the time I got to the story.)
