Circuit City closes 567 stores with loss of 30,000 jobs

By on January 19, 2009

MCV reports that Circuit City is to close 567 stores in the United States. 30,000 jobs will be lost as the US’s second-biggest consumer electronics retailer shuts down. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November 2008.

Circuit City is added to the GameOverZone. However, we don’t incorporate retail jobs in the Jobs Lost Tracker for the simple reason that while retail is critical to the success of the games business, they are not jobs lost to the industry in the same way that EA laying off 1,000 staff or Free Radical going bust with a loss of 140 jobs are.

So the GameOverZone will include retail jobs. The Job Loss Tracker will not. Hope that is clear…
