  1. Get 25% off GAMESbrief Unplugged until January 31st

    January 26, 2012

Last year, we published two volumes of GAMESbrief Unplugged – curated, edited and reorganised collections of the best of GAMESbrief. As well as being useful for reference, reorganising the content to follow the development of key stories and events makes for compelling reading for anyone with an interest in the business of games. It’s fascinating [...]

  2. Video games and riots

    August 25, 2011

This opinion piece is part of a regular series of posts I am writing for Gamasutra. Here I examine the role that video games play in society, and look at how “games as propaganda machines” played into last week’s riots in London. A week ago last Monday, I, like many Londoners, was glued to my [...]

  3. Spilt Milk Studios Development Diary 10: Marketing Marathon

    August 5, 2011

I’ve got a chart below showing an overview of the big reviews we had (Kotaku, Touch Arcade, Pocketgamer, AppSpy and more) versus the sales spikes we achieved on the following days. Frankly, it makes pretty disappointing reading – there seems to be very little boost from reviews on even the biggest sites out there. This doesn’t really surprise when I think about it, but the gut feeling is ‘what the hell?!’. Essentially it makes the point very clear that the vast majority of the iPhone market don’t pay much heed to critical reviews. Most are followed by a spike of many 20 sales, and some are even followed by dips.

  4. Censorship, IPs’ and Business

    July 31, 2011

Following the BT/Newbinz decision, an argument about censorship, IP rights and business models broke out on Twitter. The discussion is presented here as a single post, collated with storify. Weighing in on the debate featured here are: Miles Jacobson, studio director at Sports Interactive (@milessi); Ed Fear, producer and writer at Curve Studios (@edfear); Michael [...]

  5. Pachter compared social/core games to McDonalds/a steakhouse. It’s nonsense

    May 4, 2011

I was recently interviewed for a Eurogamer article entitled “Are console games dying?” It was triggered by a quote from Peter Vesterbacka of Rovio saying console games are dying at SXSW. It probably won’t surprise regular readers that I am more in the Yes camp than the No camp, although what I really I believe [...]
