"EA has been the first large developer to jump, but it's only a matter of time before a shoot-em-up is released where you can pay £20 for the best gun, or 50p for a health power-up, and large numbers of people end up frittering money away on something that is, literally, nothing."

many games fit exactly this description in the Far East esp Korea, Nexon's online FPS titles spring to mind. Article is very negative on a business model which has v low barrier to entry and enables one to spend as much or as little or as nothing as one prefers. Compares v well to value proposition of an HD FIFA disc and addresses a market which is incomparably larger in my view.

The writer is a sub-editor at the Guardian, and looking at his other posts, seems quite a lot like a fan-boy/gamer, rather than a balanced (or even biased) journalist.

Still, it's the Guardian blog, and what you're getting is a blogger's view.

Just one that I disagree with strongly.

I saw that earlier and shook my head. I think the article was just mis-informed as opposed to an atypical "think of the children!" type diatribe. I'm sure some better research and/or hands on with the actual product or the developers would have assuaged his concerns.
