[...] I’ve seen a lot of people from the mainstream industry (i.e. consoles, PC games, handheld etc – eerything EXCEPT iPhone and Facebook) incredulous, unconvinced it was worth it. This was the case even with the rumoured $250 million valuation from a month ago (c.f. Nicholas Lovell’s post on that). [...]

It's an interesting point. I do think $250 million is a great deal for EA, but I also think that the social games space will get very competitive very quickly, so the VCs might be smart to take the money now.

I'm still trying to think about Accel's return, and will come back to that in a later post.

I agree that number seems like a too-good-to-be-true valuation for EA... All good and valid points. I have a hard time to believe the rumour at the moment as I would imagine Playfish's VC willing to wait a bit more to make it even more valuable... But hey, they might have not been given a choice.

I think that's 100% spot on. I'd be interested to see if any analysts agree. Something tells me they won't as most of them seems to have their heads in the same sand as some of the other larger publishers.
