I'm pulling together a presentation which outlines why Birmingham City Council should take an active role in encouraging telecon orgs. to invest in superfast broadband as standard (100mbs). To act as a catalyst to high tech industries. Does anyone know of any research or anecdotal evidence to show that if small orgs. had 100mbs to play with they would become more successful, take more market share, employ more people etc. etc.
Thanks for your help.
Donna Galt

You make some good counters, Nick, and I guess that I sometimes forget that the nature of my work is to be ahead of the curve, even when there are good businesses taking advantage of current business models.

But I would love to see more games people there next time, and I'll be happy to help

I'm glad you found a lot to like and you make many fair points here, as you did at the forum itself.

I don't accept that it was as backwards looking - yes, there was a lot of discussion of IP protection because it's currently an area of policy focus and there is a growing demand for the framework to be clarified (one way or another) quickly. But beyond that, there was a lot of discussion of new models and opportunities - especially in the fringe programmes. A wide range of companies like Google, Spotify and Playfish spoke up for the optimists and the business model panel came down on the site of optimism. Even the IP debate was balanced with the recognition that the copyright system needs to be streamlined to encourage innovators like Mixcloud, who spoke during the session on copyright.

The games industry was probably under-represented and the timing was unhelpful in this regard (finding a clear space in the business and political calendars is extremely tough) but we were extremely conscious of the key role of the games industry while putting the programme. There were some major players that had to withdraw at relatively short notice, for different reasons. Even in their absence, it was great to hear so much admiration expressed for the games industry in an array of different debates.

I hope that c&binet has proven its worth now and that more games companies will get involved, going forward. Thanks for coming!
